And just like King Arthur, the warrior/knight who slew giants, witches and monsters as he led his band of heroes on their daring adventures, the MARTIAL ARTIST takes a Hero's Journey as well.
It's the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and our very own "Knight of the Blondes Table" ABEL GARCIA is our guide to THE ORDINARY WORLD, a world in which we must suspend disbelief and create the setting in which we can envision our future success.
THE ORDINARY WORLD OF THE MARTIAL ARTIST
by Abel Garcia
Looking for inspiration to grow your inner strength? Feel you lack the power to deal effectively with a physical attack? Then it's decision time …
Maybe you have already decided to get into a martial art, hoping to better your life by getting fit, but not long after you discover the reality of:
- A busy life that leaves little room for fitness training,
- Demands on your time from the moment you wakeup that leave you little energy for anything else,
- And continuing worries about safety that chip away at your optimism.
If life is getting in the way of your fitness goals, I have a very important message for you: your struggles are not your fault. They're simply the result of not knowing the right path. But right here and right now I will lay out a path in three simple but challenging steps. I'll tell you how you can get the personal strength you desire
Step 1: Nurture Your Inner Strength & Spirit
Since you are with me this far, I'll guess that you have already decided to study a martial art in order to build your inner strength and grow your personal power. So on to step two.
Step 2: Choose the Right Martial Art to Gain Both Mental & Physical Strength
There are many arts that can give you these two very important benefits. So how can you tell which one is for you? Visit the schools that teach interactive training drills. Watch how they train this one small but key component to mental toughness.
What are interactive training drills? These are exercises, shared between two martial art practitioners, which promote mutual growth. There are many different types of interactive drills: some schools call them "Flow Drills" or "Energy Drills." If you click this link - Chicago Fut Sao Wing Chun Association - and scroll down to No. 10, you'll see a short video example.
Different drills teach specific attributes important in a fight – all without sparing – and when you and your martial art sisters/brothers get good, you both start responding spontaneously to fight stimuli at combat speeds.
Step 3: Take the First Step On Your Hero's Journey
Drills are a very efficient way to train, so cut something out of your life that is less important to you than developing your personal strength. Make a commitment to the school that has the right vibe and energy for you. Give yourself permission and answer the call to start your personal hero's journey.
Please join us next month for Part 2 of the HERO'S JOURNEY, the CALL TO ADVENTURE, and we heroes are presented with a problem that needs solving.
